REVISE FOR YOUR EXAM · H543

OCR A Level Music Revision

Section A uses unfamiliar extracts from the two core areas, including dictation. Section B examines prescribed works; Section C contains extended writing on the additional areas of study.

OCR H543: final first teaching September 2026; final A Level assessment June 2028. This route supports students already following the qualification.

Pick a short revision course

Start in Practice, or ask your teacher to set the sequence as homework. Each activity gives feedback; a completed course has one final result code. No account needed.

Work on the skill that needs attention

These are suggested practice matches to your specification, not official exam questions. Start below the suggested level if you need to build confidence.

  • Melody Dictation →

Hear a short phrase and place its missing pitches. Use the key signature and the given notes as your anchors.

Suggested starting point: Advanced. Adjust if you need an easier step.
  • Note Name Checker →

Read notes in treble or bass clef, or place a named note on the stave. Add ledger lines only when needed.

Suggested starting point: Treble & bass · ledger lines. Adjust if you need an easier step.
  • Advanced Harmony →

Use short notation and theory questions to practise Roman numerals, inversions, suspensions and chromatic chords.

Suggested starting point: Sevenths & suspensions. Adjust if you need an easier step.
  • Interval Trainer →

Work out the distance between notes by ear. Start melodically before trying harmonic intervals.

Suggested starting point: Descending intervals. Adjust if you need an easier step.
  • Rhythm Dictation →

Listen for complete beats, then build the rhythm with crotchets, quavers and more demanding groups.

Suggested starting point: Dotted rhythms. Adjust if you need an easier step.
  • Chord Challenge →

Recognise chord qualities by ear. Move from triads to sevenths, then extended chords when relevant.

Suggested starting point: Add half diminished. Adjust if you need an easier step.
  • Cadence Trainer →

Hear a lead-up and identify the phrase ending. Add plagal and interrupted cadences when ready.

Suggested starting point: All four in major and minor keys. Adjust if you need an easier step.

How this helps with Component 05: Listening and appraising

Practise melody and bass dictation as well as score reading. When analysing a passage, find the bass note and key before deciding on a Roman numeral or inversion.

Your areas of study

  • Instrumental Music of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven
  • Popular Song: Blues, Jazz, Swing and Big Band
  • Developments in Instrumental Jazz
  • Religious Music of the Baroque Period
  • Programme Music 1820–1910
  • Innovations in Music 1900 to the Present Day

Try this way of thinking

A bass note that is the third of the chord suggests first inversion. Check the other notes before deciding: the bass alone does not identify the whole chord.

Finish with your board’s music

Revise the prescribed works for your exam year and your centre’s chosen additional areas. Practise the written analysis and essays separately. OCR’s final A Level Music assessment is June 2028.

The courses above mark short skill exercises. They do not mark exam essays, assess performance or replace your composition coursework. For creative practice, try Composition Challenge separately from assessed coursework.

Your next 15 minutes

  1. Choose one skill and complete a short round.
  2. Read the feedback, then repeat the part you missed.
  3. Open a class extract or an official paper and apply the skill in context. Explain your answer with musical evidence.
