How this helps with Component 3: Appraising
Learn the difference between a device and its effect. Recognising a sequence, pedal or cadence is a start; connect it to the phrase, texture or mood in the extract.
Your areas of study
- Musical Forms and Devices
- Music for Ensemble
- Film Music
- Popular Music
Try this way of thinking
A pedal is a sustained or repeated note while the harmony changes. It is different from an ostinato, which is a repeated musical pattern. Listen for what stays the same and what changes.
Finish with your board’s music
Study Badinerie and Africa with the correct scores, recordings and class notes. Practise real ensemble, film and popular extracts too; synthetic exercises cannot replace their sound and context.
The courses above mark short skill exercises. They do not mark exam essays, assess performance or replace your composition coursework. For creative practice, try Composition Challenge separately from assessed coursework.
Your next 15 minutes
- Choose one skill and complete a short round.
- Read the feedback, then repeat the part you missed.
- Open a class extract or an official paper and apply the skill in context. Explain your answer with musical evidence.
