REVISE FOR YOUR EXAM · 9MU0

Edexcel A Level Music Revision

Prepare the aural and score-reading skills used in Section A, including dictation. Section B asks you to develop written arguments about unfamiliar music and set works, drawing on wider listening.

Pick a short revision course

Start in Practice, or ask your teacher to set the sequence as homework. Each activity gives feedback; a completed course has one final result code. No account needed.

Work on the skill that needs attention

These are suggested practice matches to your specification, not official exam questions. Start below the suggested level if you need to build confidence.

  • Melody Dictation →

Hear a short phrase and place its missing pitches. Use the key signature and the given notes as your anchors.

Suggested starting point: Advanced. Adjust if you need an easier step.
  • Interval Trainer →

Work out the distance between notes by ear. Start melodically before trying harmonic intervals.

Suggested starting point: Descending intervals. Adjust if you need an easier step.
  • Rhythm Dictation →

Listen for complete beats, then build the rhythm with crotchets, quavers and more demanding groups.

Suggested starting point: Dotted rhythms. Adjust if you need an easier step.
  • Advanced Harmony →

Use short notation and theory questions to practise Roman numerals, inversions, suspensions and chromatic chords.

Suggested starting point: Sevenths & suspensions. Adjust if you need an easier step.
  • Chord Challenge →

Recognise chord qualities by ear. Move from triads to sevenths, then extended chords when relevant.

Suggested starting point: Add half diminished. Adjust if you need an easier step.
  • Mode Learner & Spotter →

Compare modal scales and phrases. Listen for the changed scale degree rather than just the first note.

Suggested starting point: 5 · Modal melodies. Adjust if you need an easier step.
  • Musical Elements Word Match →

Match terms and definitions. Choose an element and edit the word list to target what you need.

Suggested starting point: Choose GCSE or A Level terms and your element. Adjust if you need an easier step.

How this helps with Component 3: Appraising

Separate the task of hearing a detail from the task of explaining it. Work out the interval, harmony or rhythm first, then connect that evidence to style and context in a written answer.

Your areas of study

  • Vocal Music
  • Instrumental Music
  • Music for Film
  • Popular Music and Jazz
  • Fusions
  • New Directions

Try this way of thinking

A dominant seventh contains a root, major third, perfect fifth and minor seventh. After recognising it, check how it resolves and use that detail to support an argument about the passage.

Finish with your board’s music

Study the set works for your examination year and keep examples from wider listening. Practise the unfamiliar-music response and set-work essays with the official mark schemes.

The courses above mark short skill exercises. They do not mark exam essays, assess performance or replace your composition coursework. For creative practice, try Composition Challenge separately from assessed coursework.

Your next 15 minutes

  1. Choose one skill and complete a short round.
  2. Read the feedback, then repeat the part you missed.
  3. Open a class extract or an official paper and apply the skill in context. Explain your answer with musical evidence.
