Section A tests listening to unfamiliar music; Section B focuses on study pieces. Build confidence with the musical elements and notation, then apply those skills to the pieces your class studies.

How this helps with Component 1: Understanding music
Use precise vocabulary for what you actually hear. Keep melody, harmony, tonality and texture separate: a question about texture needs an answer about the musical layers, not whether the music is major or minor.
Your areas of study
- Western classical tradition 1650–1910
- Popular music
- Traditional music
- Western classical tradition since 1910
Try this way of thinking
A melody with chordal accompaniment can have a homophonic texture. Major describes its tonality. Practise hearing those as two different musical features.
Finish with your board’s music
Revise the compulsory study piece and your chosen additional area for the correct exam year. The first-assessed-2026 study pieces differ from older papers, so check your teacher’s list before revising.
The courses above mark short skill exercises. They do not mark exam essays, assess performance or replace your composition coursework. For creative practice, try Composition Challenge separately from assessed coursework.
Your next 15 minutes
- Choose one skill and complete a short round.
- Read the feedback, then repeat the part you missed.
- Open a class extract or an official paper and apply the skill in context. Explain your answer with musical evidence.
